A Research on the Effects of Retrospective Group Music Therapy using Narrative on Ego-integrity and Quality of Life for Elderly People Living in Nursing Home

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of retrospective group music therapy on ego-integrity and quality of life using narrative for elderly people living in nursing home. The participants of this study were 16 elderly people from Seoul C senior care center nursing home who were older than 65. Eight people were randomly assigned to an experimental group, and the other eight to a control group. The experimental group members participated in 12 retrospective group music therapy sessions twice a week for 50 minutes. The SPSS 20.0 program was utilized for data analysis of the two test: The Mann-Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon Matched Pair test. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed a significant difference between the two groups both in the ego-integrity and quality of life scores. In the Wilcoxon Matched Pair test, ego-integrity and quality of life in the experimental group showed a significant difference in pre- and post- scores, whereas the control group showed no significant difference. Out of six subcategories of ego-integrity, the areas of satisfaction of current life, attitude about life, wise life and acceptance of aging showed significant differences. However, there were no significant differences in acceptance of past life and death.
